The Murtaya has been carefully designed to offer an exciting and straightforward project for home assembly. The only donor parts required are sourced from a single donor vehicle, the classic shape (1993-2000) Subaru Impreza in either normally aspirated or turbocharged form.

The donor vehicles are now readily available, particularly due to the high number of ‘grey’ import cars that have been brought into the UK from Japan. These cars, especially the WRX and STI models, make for superb donor cars as the standard specification makes for an incredibly exciting package when built up with one of our kit options giving simply blistering performance and road holding. Complete donor cars are now on the market from £500 with imported WRX and STI’s available complete with MOT from £1500-2500. Buying a car in good road worthy condition within this price range is highly recommended as it allows you to try the car to ensure that everything works as it should, and selling the good quality parts that you do not require will recoup a significant part of the original purchase price.

For the ultimate in donor vehicles an Impreza Type R or Type RA should be sought. Although rarer, harder to find and more expensive, the list of competition homologation special components fitted as standard to these models create an incredible package that will build into a sensational sportscar.

The build itself is well detailed in the build manual which includes many photographs to illustrate the various stages of the construction process. The main monocoque is pre-drilled with all of the major suspension and drive train mounting points clearly defined. This ensures that the basic geometry of your vehicle will be correct, simply leaving detailed suspension set up to be completed at the end of the build.

The careful design of the car ensures that a majority of the donor parts are used in unmodified form, with the parts that do need adjustment being modified at the factory. This means that the mechanical build is largely a simple case of removing the parts from the donor, reconditioning as you see fit, and then bolting them into your new car. It is possible to get to a rolling chassis situation in a single day which is hugely satisfying and provides great motivation to tackle some of the more time consuming jobs such as trimming the interior.

Undoubtedly the most intimidating aspect of the build for the home mechanic will be the wiring loom as there is an awful lot of it! However with some time and simple precautions this really should hold no fears. The loom is brilliantly designed with many simple connectors; these blocks will only fit together with the appropriate other half so it is difficult to go too far wrong. Take plenty of time when stripping down the donor car, labelling the block connectors carefully as you separate them and the re-assembly should be straightforward.

The kits are offered in either 3 modular stages or a comprehensive format to suit the individual builder. The Modular packages will allow those who are short of either budget or space to complete their vehicle as money or room become available, whilst the Comprehensive package gives all that is required (other than the donor components) to finish the build. Please feel free to ring us to discuss your individual circumstances and we can advise on the best route to follow.

Kit delivery time is approximately six to eight weeks from the receipt of a completed order form with the appropriate paid deposit. The final balance is required upon collection/delivery of the kit.

With all self build owners advice is only a phone call or email away. We believe that the process of building your Murtaya should be enjoyable, so if you are stuck or frustrated at any time we will be only to happy to offer our words of (hopefully!) wisdom accumulated through grazing our own knuckles doing the same things as you.

As you draw towards the end of your build we will be happy to carry out a free and comprehensive pre SVA inspection at our factory. We will identify any areas where we believe there may be issues and advise on the best course of action to rectify any problems. Hopefully if you have taken your time and followed the manual there should be little to find, and a free pre test inspection ought to ensure a stress free day at the SVA centre and of course hitting the road soon after!
